Democracy has arrived at a crossroads. There is a growing sense that the very concept of democratic rule has come under scrutiny. Rapid technological change, global interdependence, and citizen dissatisfaction with “old” models of party competition and representation are continuously reshaping the parameters of political life in Europe, North America, and many parts of the world. In this talk, Laurence Whitehead takes a comparative perspective on current political developments and explores the historical and institutional roots of growing democratic  disenchantment.

Laurence Whitehead is a Senior Research Fellow at Nuffield College, University of Oxford. He is a leading scholar in the field of democratization and co-authored the ground-breaking monograph series „Transitions from Authoritarian Rule“.
