Kurze Beschreibung / Abstract:

This chapter explores the role of civilian masculinities around the questions of justice, care, and processes of social repair in Indian-administered Kashmir. Through a particular expression of civilian masculinity represented by Imran (name changed), a prominent lawyer and human rights activist in Kashmir, the chapter discusses the possibility of reworking the theorization of masculinities in conflict, by centering the focus on agency of civilian men. Furthermore, the chapter also discusses the strong prospects that caring masculinities hold in positively influencing both state-centric justice processes and everyday social repair and remaking lives in the wake of violence. Through Imran’s story, the chapter also revisits transitional justice as a concept and pays closer attention to mundane acts of care, social repair, and rebuilding selves in the absence of institutional mechanisms, recognizing these acts as empowering forms of transitions.
